Update: On Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack they hold The One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest. Picture hundreds of the most dazzling, colorful and floral hats on beautiful ladies as young as five — roaming the grounds. What a show!

What did you say?

You would never attend such an impractical event. You were taught showing off was bad. Besides, those ladies are asking for trouble flaunting their healthy exuberance.

But isn't that just it?

They're celebrating life. You wouldn't buy roses to hide them. You show them off because they bring joy, radiate life and generate smiles. It's not only okay, but healthy to celebrate the wonderful person that you are.

Latest Buzz...

The buzz last week was created when an Arab Sheikh sent his £190,000 Lamborghini from Qatar to Britain on Qatar Airways for an oil change. Total cost: £23,552. Total miles: 6,500.

Wealthy people operate with a different mindset. When they want something done, they do it. They rarely wait for approval or permission.

And when they spend money, many other people prosper. In this case, the car transport company, the Lambo Dealership and Qatar Airways all benefited. The world doesn't benefit from wealthy people who hoard their money.

Million-Dollar Mindset

Dear Associate,

One of the most valuable success lessons to master is: Becoming the person that you are striving to be. For instance if you want to become a millionaire, start behaving like a millionaire. Develop the mindset that distinguishes you from the majority. Then begin to live out that mindset.

I remember a time when the only clothes I had in my closet belonged in a JC Penney's catalog. This was before I discovered they even had a suits section. Growing up in a lower middle-class environment, I had minimal exposure to accessories such as ties or cuff links. The dress shirts I wore came in small, medium or large.

One day a confidant showed me a different catalog...

He invited me to an Italian clothier. He explained that the finest tailors are from Italy and Hong Kong. And they would make you look like a million bucks.

At Spaccio's, I entered a world I've never been. Their suit selection, style and colors were definitely not JC Penney's. And they stocked a lot more than three shirt sizes. They know how to make you look dynamite.

I've always believed: Clothes don't make a man. The man makes the clothes.

But let me say this: strangers treat you with more regard when you dress nicer. Especially the opposite gender. They tend to smile more and are extremely open for dialogue.

What a valuable lesson to learn. Now let's look at making changes from within. This becomes more challenging because it usually requires improving on personal behaviors.

If you receive a surprise statement billing you for three years of local business taxes that you've never heard of, or the bank has assessed your credit card account a first-time-ever late penalty fee for being one day late yet the customer service lady from overseas continues to parrot that you're a valuable long-time customer, or the dry cleaner has destroyed your dinner gown — you have to do everything within your power to keep your cool and not let it gnaw at you.

Don't allow negative stuff to overcome your good senses. Don't let it have power to control your gut emotions. And don't allow it to best you.

This is a struggle you have to win if you want to attract the best and brightest people. Because like attracts like — winners attract other winners. So don't let your guard down for one moment. One John McEnroe 'moment' could do you in.

Imagine being followed by a movie camera capturing everything that goes on. You are the star. What do you want the audience to see when they play your film? Hopefully the best in you. That's why it's critically important to keep your guard up.

And finally, because most of us are involved in business, the way a prospect perceives you is a direct result of the message you send from your marketing materials. The look of your marketing promos has to be congruent with your core message.

If you have typos, print your brochure on flyer paper, or pass out tenth generation photocopies of an article — you're not going to get a lot of traction. Especially if you're prospecting business owners, CEOs and management people.

The same holds true if your website appears cheesy with overpowering color schemes, twirling logos, and fonts that are not reader friendly. You only have a short time to persuade your visitor to stay, so invite her in with valuable information, tips or tools. And with a website that's easy to navigate.

Some other ideas to ponder...

Maybe it's time to send your newsletter in a snazzy-colored, foil-type envelope instead of the standard manila. Perhaps sending a CD or DVD with a cover letter can be more effective than a mailing containing your catalog. Or maybe it's time to graduate to a four-color brochure or catalog.

I can go on about the million-dollar mindset, but I'm sure you get the picture. Run your business and personal life like it's already reached that next plateau. You'll then reach your goals in shorter time.

Warm regards,
