Update: As I'm writing this section, I'm looking forward to two mini-coaching sessions today with speakers who have decades more experience than I. They have been developing their skills the same time I was enrolled in high school, college and then earning a living. The cost is minimal compared to what I could come away with.

Are you investing the time, money and effort to becoming better? Are you creating value whereby other people want to seek you out? Think about this as we dive into today's...

A Note From Tommy...

Communicating On a Higher Plane...

I met a sales rep named Philip who was only interested in making money for himself. He makes sales presentations to companies pitching his revolutionary computer. He sat me down to find out more about what I do.

After I answered each one of his questions he insisted, "But how do you make money doing that?" I explained it to him in simple terms but I might as well have been speaking in another language. He wasn't getting it. I could tell he was getting frustrated. He became very arrogant and said, "I know what I'm doing to make money. Do you?"

He was emitting an overabundance of negative energy. I got the feeling you don't really matter to him unless he could profit from you. He was just looking for shortcuts. I wanted to get away from him as quickly as possible. Not only is he an ideal candidate for self-development, but he really needed to communicate on a higher plane.

Most people you meet are gracious and kind. Yet a certain percentage are not. Avoid the negative types. They will zap the life force out of you.

The Sanctuary for Self-development

Dear Associate,

"This is a Sanctuary for Self-development..."

That's the phrase the president of my speech workshop coined for our organization. How fitting that is. Especially since our members are on that journey for self-improvement.

While on that journey I recently gave a short presentation for my group. It was a message they've never heard before. It was recorded on DVD. I came in thinking I'd ace it because I was very pleased the last time I gave it. Instead, I lost focus and stalled twice. I was disappointed to say the least.

But afterward, here's the surprise I received...

An experienced speech coach wanted to get together to help me fine-tune a few things. One autism speaker/author asked me for more information about my topic. One educator suggested I'm just touching the tip of the iceberg of my true potential.

One elder member asked me for a copy of my DVD. An absent cross-cultural awareness expert wanted to borrow my video. A tennis instructor suggested a stronger close. And for fun, one member bragged about becoming my agent. All-in-all people were touched and moved.

I was in a nice space.

These comments came from caring, professional people. We meet for self-improvement yet we also revel in each other's successes. We were in a sanctuary where we could plumb the depths of self-development and still not reach its boundaries.

Which leads me to ask, "Are you operating in that nice space?"

Do you surround your space with people who lift you up? Do they see your potential and encourage you to move toward it? Can you lower your guard to become transparent and know that the trust won't be compromised?

Here's a recent example of being in that nice space...

One beloved realtor in our sanctuary was absent for months. She wrote the membership announcing she will be taking a hiatus and would be canceling her membership. This didn't sit well with the many members who knew her.

To show our love and concern one member started a one-dollar collection to reinstate her membership. Although our realtor friend could probably pay the membership dues of the entire eighty members without batting an eye—this small, yet powerful gesture is enough to say, "You matter to us. You mean something to us. It isn't the same without you."

Isn't this an accurate picture of real prosperity manifesting in the physical plane? What the material things in life couldn't bring—caring people could. Especially when those people are students of self-development.

Most people I meet don't quite understand why students of self-development study for life. They believe the notion that once formal education is over—their studies are over. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Your journey through personal development begins when you want. It ends when you want. In the meantime, you'll discover the personal expansion within you will manifest itself on the physical plane, creating a meaningful and rewarding life most people would covet.

And isn't this the nice space you want to be in?

Warm regards,
