Update: The food was fresh, filling and fantastic at a friend's 4th of July barbeque. I networked with biotech people and watched a bunch of tween girls enjoying the pool. And from the backyard, we saw the fireworks from two different venues.

A Note From Tommy...

Is Patriotism Dead or Alive?

Call me traditional but I wore my "I'm proud to be an American" t-shirt at a friend's 4th of July party. Out of the forty partygoers, I felt slightly out of place as everyone else wore their normal clothing ensemble. In fact the only other item resembling anything patriotic was a stars and stripes flag displayed outside the front doors.

Was this shocking?

No. I believe most Americans (not all) have decided not to show their patriotism because it might not be socially correct. Or they feel it may offend someone in our culturally diverse landscape. Or maybe they're unhappy with the political and economic climate. So they conform to what's norm and remain neutral.

Sissies.

I may not be in agreement with where the country is heading but I have enough regard to remember where it's been...

It's given freedoms and rights to individuals and abolished an embarrassment called slavery. It has rushed to the aid of nations and people groups facing disaster, starvation or tyranny. It has given women an equal voice in the political arena. And during one very tense week in October 1962, Mr. Kennedy boldly said, "No!" to Mr. Khrushchev.

If this passiveness continues, the Pledge of Allegiance may be the next to get silenced. At baseball games, at public gatherings and even at military ceremonies. Then I believe we'll continue down a slippery slope losing our identity as a sovereign nation.

During these confusing times one question begs to be asked:

Must we become victims of another terrorist attack before we'll rally together in a show of patriotic strength and unity? Let's hope not.

Idol, Video and Your Self-promo

Dear Associate,

It had to be one of the highest rated, most entertaining and energy-driven side shows of any National Speakers Association's National Convention. The music began. A young man walked onto the stage and performed a dance routine to every genre of American pop music from the 20th Century. Solo.

Afterwards the crowd erupted in a wild, ecstatic frenzy reserved for rock stars and celebrities. He had the audience on their feet begging for more. Where did they find such talent?

YouTube.

At the time, he was the hottest thing in online video. His new fans shared that video to all their friends. And his video advertisement spread like a virus.

What can this mean for you?

One of the fastest and most powerful marketing strategies for getting results overnight is by producing videos, uploading them onto the Internet, and then promoting them. It's the latest craze to get well known on a budget. And you won't have to face national humiliation staring into the eyes of Simon Cowell to get there.

The production costs are minimal. You'll receive instant recognition. Your adoring fans can then promote your video to their e-mail lists, post the link on their blog, or embed it onto their website.

You'll save time and money from producing, duplicating and then sending out your sample DVDs through traditional snail mail. You won't have to pay for additional space on your website's host server. And you can crank out a bunch of videos in the morning and present them to potential clients across the globe in the afternoon.

Here's what else your online videos can do:

1) It's your teaching tool. You can upload short tutorials and lessons that compel people to find out more about you and your programs. You can demonstrate how to perform a certain task that pictures or graphics from your accompanying book cannot fully explain. And you can visually present a certain method or technique that's hard to picture from listening to audio files alone. It's actually your talking article.

2) It allows you to show-off your talents. You can sing your latest original song and get feedback from online music communities. (This is a far cry from garage bands.) You can display your latest technical masterpiece to WOW headhunters from various industries. Or you can give a snippet of your keynote speech — showing the audience anticipating your every word. It's actually your movie trailer to the world.

And finally...

3) It's your shameless plug. Maybe you'd like to promote your products, your services or your company. Perhaps you'd like to create interest in your recent coaching program, a public seminar or your mastermind group. Or perhaps you'd want some press for your latest business launch, website or book signing. It's actually a commercial for You, Inc.

Your online video can be the teaser pointing back to your business, to other related videos or to a commercial website. It also puts a face on fresh talent and on tomorrow's rising stars. And it has the power to catapult you from an unknown — like the young man above — into an overnight sensation.

Warm regards,
